Message to the Youth
A Poem from the Cell of a Political Prisoner in Cereso No.5, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas

Today I am a prisoner in jail,
All is sadness.
I live in a prison,
All is pain.
Here a man disguises his joy
And his weeping; only God hears him.
There are courtrooms and cells
And rooms for conjugal visits;
The guards treat the inmates like animals.
The prisoner lives that way, awakens anew, and dreams,
Longing for freedom.
The Cereso No. 5, San Cristóbal de las Casa,
Will live in my memories,
Its cold, cramped hallways hurt my mind.
There are people here unjustly,
And there is no friend that comes to visit,
Only a mother who can’t forget her son;
And even the biggest man,
Saddened, begins to cry.
