A Narco
News Global Alert:
June 19, 2002
Please Distribute Widely
Dear Colleagues,
After a very brief flurry
of post-coup corrections and meas culpas, the simulators
of the mass media (from the Four Horsemen of Simulation - AP,
Reuters, New York Times and CNN - on down to yesterday's
Christian Science Monitor) have reverted to their same
unsubstantiated rumor-mongering fictional coverage of the immediate
history underway in Venezuela.
What is, in fact, ocurring
in Venezuela these days is far more interesting than any of them
want to inform you, because it involves the development of popular
methods to weaken the illusory power of them, the caste members
of the mass media, too.
Therefore, The Narco
News Bulletin makes this announcement to our readers and
colleagues, and serves notice to the simulators and Otto Reichians
alike:
The information blockade
will not stand. The
Narco Newsroom this week begins reporting directly from Venezuela.
We bring you the unspun authentic news, uncensored, from the
voices that the simulators are trying to block from your ears
and eyes: those of the Venezuelan people, its media workers in
revolt, and its democratically elected leaders.
Stay tuned for the authentic
news.
From somewhere else, yet
again, in a country called América,

Historic Statement
by
Venezuela Media
Workers
"It was made abundantly
clear from the disastrous
image of those days of disinformation, in which the majority
of employees, reporters and journalists put our lives on the
line only for media owners and board members to decide not to
publish anything and hide from the public the serious events
that were taking place in the streets, while mainstream TV channels
aired old movies as if nothing was happening. We all must assume
those days of confusion, tensions, interests, and mistakes with
courage and rectify with deep sincerity. No more manipulation.
We workers say firmly and responsibly that we will not accept
such behavior again."

Tackles Simulators of
"Press Freedom"
"Closing its eyes to the one of the most odious
media campaigns ever launched against a democratic government,
the organisation Reporters sans Frontières ("Reporters
Without Borders") has allowed itself to be manipulated and
has published several reports against the Chavez government,
which has never limited freedom of expression, banned media,
or arrested a journalist."

"Narco News, its website, and the writers
who post information, are entitled to all the First Amendment
protections accorded a newspaper-magazine or journalist... Furthermore,
the nature of the articles printed on the website and Mr. Giordano's
statements at Columbia University constitute matters of public
concern because the information disseminated relates to the drug
trade and its affect on people living in this hemisphere..."

"And in the cause of journalism
we're also pleased
about a recent ruling by Judge Paula Omansky of the New York
State Supreme Court dismissing libel charges against Mario Menendez,
a Mexican journalist, and Al Giordano, editor and publisher of
Narco News, an Internet magazine (www.narconews.com),
published in Mexico, that reports on corruption and the drug
war in Latin America.... Banamex took him to court in Mexico
and lost. The bank then sued Narco News, along with Menendez,
in New York. Again they lost in what is a stirring victory for
freedom of speech on the Internet. Narco News has broken
important stories on the drug war. If it had lost, a chill could
have settled over the web."
