The immersion, the moment when you lose yourself and slip into the life of another; that is what I love about collecting stories.

It's what I love about getting swallowed by the black hole of Mexico City - La Merced, the worship of San Judas at the Church of San Hipólito, the Chopo and its heavy metal I-only-wear-black-every-single-day-of-the-year crowd, the albino turkeys and rainbow dyed chicks for sale at the Mercado de Sonora.

I moved to Mexico City in 2011 after finishing my Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies at the University of Kentucky because I wanted to remember what I loved about writing and storytelling. I wanted to transition from writing about human rights academically to actually working in human rights. I wanted to find some meaning outside of academic writing (which, it appeared, nobody read), and to write in a way that would reflect on-the-ground research, experiences, and interviews.

This is where the Narco News School for Authentic Journalism entered my life, because it represents the kind of practical, hands-on style of writing, video making, and journalism that I want to learn. As I seek to discover the connection between activism and writing, between social movements and the stories they tell, the Narco News School for Authentic Journalism will play a central role in my understanding of these issues.

I encourage you to make a donation to the Fund for Authentic Journalism so that it can continue to support journalists and activists, so that we can continue to be immersed in the voices and lives of others in a meaningful way.
