Unofficial List Released of Arrested, Hospitalized and Missing from the Events in Atenco

List Shows 216 Arrested and 63 Dissapeared; Protest March Scheduled for Today

By Juan Trujillo
The Other Journalism with the Other Campaign in Mexico City

May 5, 2006

SAN SALVADOR ATENCO, AND MEXICO CITY, MAY 4, 2006: The violent actions that have come out of the total war between the peasant farmers of Atenco and the various groups of municipal, state and federal police that arrived this morning and yesterday have left a trail of pain, death and imprisonment in their wake. There are about 216 people in jail, including two Spaniards, two Chileans and a German, and around a hundred injured. They have received the same barbarous treatment whether or not they were members of the Zapatista Other Campaign.

Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that a few members of the Peaoples’ Front for the Defense of the Earth (FPDT in its Spanish initials) from San Salvador Atenco gave a harsh beating to at least one police officer yesterday on the highway-battlefield.

Meanwhile, today at 10:30 p.m., in a general assembly of the Other Campaign in Mexico City and with the presence of FPDT leader América del Valle, it was decided to hold a protest march on May 5 to support the people of Atenco. The gathering will occur at the University of Chapingo at 2 p.m., to depart at 4 p.m, sharp for the center of San Salvador Atenco.

Alexis Benumea, a student at the Economics Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and son of Angel Benumea (member of the UNAM Workers’ Sector and a recognized political activist) was taken out of a house where he had taken shelter in the center of San Salvador Atenco and is in serious condition after having been hit in the head by a tear gas or pepper spray grenade (). According to information relayed to this reporter by Narco News journalist Quetzal Belmont by telephone from the hospital where he was taken, Benumea’s situation is highly critical. According to the latest information (10:20 p.m. May 4), he had a 30 percent hematoma (bleeding in the brain) and two exposed skull fractures.

Below we publish the list of people arrested by the various police units during the confrontations of May 3 and 4 in Texcoco and San Salvador Atenco. This information is being confirmed as events developed and cannot be considered official.

Explanation

List of people arrested, injured and missing, including foriengers, in relation to the events of May 3 and 4 in San Salvador Atenco.

Version 3.1, updated at 11 a.m. May 5, 2006

This list is part of a collective effort to safeguard the wellbeing of the detained. If you have any correction to make we would appreciate it if you would share it with us by writing to: presos.politicos.libertad@gmail.com

This list was put together by compiling information from various different sources. In general it corresponds to the source cited at the top of the list. When possible, information has been added that we consider to be reliable.

Sources include Centro PRODH, Indymedia, Reforma, telephone contacts, and the CNDH mailing list. Bárbara Zámora reported 206 arrested and 6 hospitalized (212 total) after she went searching in Almoloyita.

Current statistics:

63 missing/disappeared
209 arrested
5 foreign nationals arrested

Journalistic Information:

The list varied according to the traditional media. Reforma speaks of 207 detained. According to El Universal, “the head of the Federal Preventive Police, Ardelio Vargas, said that the Front ‘is on the way toward falling apart’ after the arrests of 210 of its members.” La Jornada speaks of 217 arrests.

Foreigners

The only foreign nationals officially recognized as having been arrested are mentioned below. The information comes from the official CNDH list. According to several different accounts there were as many as 13 foreigners arrested, but we do not know if some of them are mixed in with the lists above. Several organizations are working up a strategy to push for the human rights and due process of the detained to be respected. At 3 a.m. on May 5 they were taken to the Iztapalapa immigration center. Without knowing their names, we assume that the people moved there were the same people mentioned below, as their nationalities match.

  1. Samantha Dietmar – Germany arrested
  2. Maria Sostres Torrida – Spain arrested
  3. Cristina Vals Fernandez – Spain arrested
  4. Mario Alberto Aguirre Tomic – Chile arrested en Almoyolita
  5. Valentina Palma Novoa Chile arrested
